Might As Well Face It, I’m Addicted to Pubs

Okay, I admit it… I’m addicted to magazines.  And books.   And the backs of cereal boxes…

I have a half-finished issue of Red on my iPad, along with a teetering stack of magazines on the bedside table – everything from Self to Rachel Ray to Marie Claire.   And I’m not one, but two months behind.  Yes, February issues are already arriving and I haven’t finished with January yet.  Then there are the books.

There are e-books on my Kindle and on my Nook.  And I have a shelf full of paperbacks and hardbacks.  Patiently waiting books, like Angelology by Danielle Trussoni, and Pat Conroy’s South of Broad, as well as the latest installment of Miss Julia (I love Miss Julia!).  Not to mention the nonfiction stuff, like Are You There Blog?  It’s Me, Writer by Kristen LambThe problem is finding the time to read all this stuff.  By the time I prop myself up with pillows, intending to read a couple of chapters before I go to sleep, I – erm – well, I go to sleep.  With the book still open on my lap.  Not a pretty sight, I’m sure.

I like to hoard books, too.  My justification (such as it is) is that, eventually, it will snow.  A lot.  And when it does, I’ll have an entire week to prop my feet up in front of the fire and catch up on all that reading.

Right.

The reality?  It rarely snows in the Washington DC metro area.  And when it does, it’s just enough to cause several dozen fender-benders and maybe – maybe – buy me an hour or two delay if the Federal Government decides to open late.  So… I’m left with a growing shelf of unread books and a pile of electronic reading devices that make me feel stressed and guilty every time I look at them.  They stare back at me in silent reproach.  So I’ve decided to try a bit harder.  I’ll read while I’m waiting in line.  I’ll read during my lunch hour (what lunch hour?).  I’ll get up an hour earlier to read the papers.  I’ll…

Wait a minute.  I’ve just realized… there’s a new Walter Mosley just out.  And a new Sophie Kinsella. *sigh*

I know, I know – I already have too many books to read in one lifetime.  But I’ll buy these two.  Surely a couple more books won’t hurt?  Because, honestly, I’ll read them all, eventually.  I will!

After all, the weather channel’s calling for a chance of snow at the end of the week…
